Southern voters might be surprised to learn that the Labour heartlands are not the romanticised ‘green valleys’ surrounding the far from romantic pit villages of the Rhonda Valley that the wind-bag Neil Kinnock liked to promote as the seat of Labour Power.
Nor are they the teeming back alleys of Liverpool surrounding the now redundant Mersey docks, as Derek Hatton would have you believe.
The real seat of Labour’s brutal half nelson on the levers of power is within hailing distance of the birthplace of their very first MP, Keir Hardie.
It is on Clydeside, where both Gordon Brown and Michael Martin, the mendacious Prime Minister and equally mendacious ex-Speaker, acquired their safe seats, voted into power by a collection of gangsters, hoodlums, drug barons, religious fanatics, and professional criminals who would have felt at home in Al Capone’s Chicago.
In the South, we have been indoctrinated to believe that ‘the Scots’ are all dour, prudent, trustworthy, serious minded individuals, who travel the world building bridges and canals, asking only that the occasional haggis be thrown their way on Burn’s night in return. So successful has this branding been, that for years, any television advertisement urging you to part with your cash to a bank, insurance company or pension plan would be dutifully intoned by a heavy Scottish accent – believed to impart the sub-conscious message that your money was ‘as safe as houses’. Part of the success of the Royal Bank of Scotland was that, well, they were Scottish.
Hailing from a proud Scottish family myself – I count Mungo Park amongst my ancestors and a famous family of publishers – I had bought into this image as much as any less informed Southerner. Indeed, as a ‘transported to Liverpool’ family, we stressed our Scottish ancestry, or at least my father did, as a way of marking himself out from what he saw as the common or garden hoi polloi of Liverpool. He spent a small fortune ironing out my Liverpool accent, and teaching me Scottish dancing, before finally persuading most of the family to change their name to a double barrelled version, believing it to impart ‘Scottish respectability’. Ho hum.
Steven Purcell’s spectacular fall from grace has finally exposed this vision of respectability for what it is – a vision of national unity as unrealistic as the idea that the honest Idaho farmer is the consummate American, and we need delve no further into matters of the Chicago Mafia, or Los Angeles gangsters.
It is a tragedy for the ordinary, respectable Scot.
Long before the death of John Smith, Glasgow politics was embroiled in seamy dealings. The Monklands Inquiry, headed by William Nimo Smith QC exposed a world of sectarian skulduggery, where the mainly Catholic councillors had diverted funds towards predominately Catholic Coatbridge, rather than neighbouring Airdrie. No less than 70 significant appointments had been made to relatives of Labour Party members.
The Labour Party had barely managed to pull the antimacassar over that squawking parrot, than Irene Adams MP for Paisley North piped up that her constituency committee had been infiltrated by drug dealers and gangster. She went on the record to name drug dealer and enforcer Stewart Boyd as the source of death threats she received whilst campaigning against drug dealing. Boyd was killed in an inexplicable car accident on the Marbella coast road, so ferocious that it led police to believe that Semtex had been present in one of the cars.
The first time that Southerners really registered the goings-on in Glasgow was when Mohammed Sarwar became the first Muslim MP in the UK, standing for Glasgow Govan. His election was quickly followed by allegations of vote rigging and bribes. Initially suspended from taking office, he was later acquitted when he claimed that the £5,000 he was known to have handed to an opponent was in fact a loan….. (as you do)
He is not standing in the 2010 election, but guess what? – his son Anas has been nominated as the prospective parliamentary candidate. That is Anas, not Athif, his other son who has recently been convicted of £850,000 worth of money laundering….
Still the Southern media took little interest in these goings on, I have exhumed most of them from Scottish newspapers or the BBCs Scottish editions. It seems that they felt we would not be interested in the endemic culture of corruption surrounding the area from which our Prime Minister would emerge.
It was not only the drug mafia and the crime mafia that we were protected from news of but the gay mafia too. We were told that the suicide of Gordon McMaster MP was ‘not suspicious’ and may have been because he was suffering from Gulf War Syndrome.
The Scottish press, presuming their readers to be of sterner stuff to we squishy southerners, were leaking tales of a suicide note naming a fellow MP, a darkly gay lifestyle of pubs where casual sex was available on the premises, and suggestions that what ailed him might have been Aids.
Little wonder then that with so many scandals on his constituency doorstep, even the ambitious Gordon Brown was persuaded that perhaps Tony Blair should head the Labour Party unopposed when John Smith died. By transferring the focus to Blair, the full horror of political life in Glasgow was kept on the back burner.
We were bemused when Michael Martin appeared in the Speaker’s chair; the man seemed barely able to read his speech. We were shocked when Jim Devine stumbled his way through an interview regarding his expenses. How could such a man become an MP was the common remark.
Quite easily on Clydeside, is the answer. Devine and Martin are the cream of the Glasgow School of political greasy pole climbing. The nepotism and corruption of local elections has meant that many who might have been doomed to spend a life on the dole, insufficiently educated to do any more than apply for the dwindling number of manual labour jobs available in the area, have been able to secure local council positions, and by assiduously protecting the backs of the strongest, work their way up into the higher echelons of the Labour Party.
Steven Purcell, ex-leader of Glasgow City Council navigated his way through this morass, but despite being interviewed by the Serious Crime Squad over his links with major criminals in the area, despite his cocaine habit causing him to fall victim to an underworld cocaine blackmail plot, was still considered as recently as the past two weeks, to be a suitable person to be dinning with the Prime Minister of the UK.
His background, his behaviour, his contacts, simply didn’t seem unusual to anyone steeped in Glasgow politics. No alarm bells rung.
It was not until Purcell also had to contend with his young male friend Danus McKinley, who was apparently ‘devoted to him’ being found dying on the steps of City Hall shortly after Purcell had fled screaming from a drug rehabilitation centre, that anybody south of the border wondered seriously how this man had risen so high in the Labour Party.
We must now ask the same question of Gordon Brown, Nick Brown and all the rest of the Glasgow mafia who have been so comfortably ensconced in the ‘Mother of all Parliaments’.
Did the Glasgow voters act out of character? Did they suddenly decide to elect names that hadn’t been suggested to them via the local mafia. Did they ignore the cronyism, nepotism, threats, blackmail, and extortion carried out by the gangs, and say to themselves ‘ we will resist all that and only vote for men we know to be good, honest and true’.
How exactly did Gordon Brown rise to the top of this political sewer and get to take tea with the Queen every Tuesday afternoon?

Dunno, but must be a bit of a blow for Queenie to have that ill-educated lout sitting opposite her every Tuesday, gurning away in his badly fitting suits. And, no doubt lying through his teeth with every gurn.
when you have time, turn your attention to the allegations made in private eye concerning the goings on in tower hamlets
“Gulf War Syndrome”! For a second there I thought I had found a Labour politician with a history of military service.
But the, no… of course not… it was a Gulf War Syndrome like illness caused by gardening products.
Or bullshit as us southern nancies refer to it.
You have only scratched the surface.
Does anyone where Watson and Irvine of Purcell spin and litigation fame were this week-end?
Purcell ” hired” his own team at £x,ooo per day to defend hiMself against the City’s own legal advisers and spin “doctors.”
You also have not mentioned the family links of the former First Minister Jack McConnell and certain well known underground figure who have a habit of killing each other. The money that was raised at Red Rose Dinners; where did it go?
The question is as much where to start nevermind where to stop.
Tick tock
It was Golf war syndrome, played on expenses probably.
“Cream of political greasy pole climbing” Best quote ever ! I love it
You would do well to read the unpleasant details here

Holby, there is more, much more.
But, I have a wife and a small child to think about and I am only a half hour drive away from Glasgow. I already pulled a post the other day.
It’s all very well being brave, but it’s too close to home for me.
And it’s not the political types I fear.
Rab,
I think you are very wise – I note three Russian assylum seekers chose to leave their 15th floor apartment via the window rather than wait for the lift to take them down into the wonderful land of fredom and security that they had taken refuge in.
“That is Anas, not Athif”
Hehe – I read “that is an ass, not a thief”. Coincidence? I think not.
Nice one Richard!
Anna, I’ll still be snapping at the heels of the political bastards. That’s for sure.

Council closes ranks on Steven Purcell cocaine claims
So mote it be
I didn’t know you were in the Knights of St Columba Holby?
Very soon we will find that the Council will be denying that they know anyone with the name of Purcell. He will have become a non person, just like the links to articles of old in certain newspapers to other connections of Labour worthies and Glasgow heavies.
Park? Wouldn’t Willie Park be a better bet? Or Helen Anne Park? Then there was John Park a coal heaver of Leith who at 73 married a lady forty years younger. And if your publishers were the Macmillan’s they came from the wrong side of Arran.
Demetrius,
Macmillan? Far too low brow!
from Rantin Rabs
“Steven Purcell spent a recent holiday in Florida helping out the Democrats and Barack Obama.”
Along with Old Holborn’s tweety girlfriend Kerry McCarthy perhaps???
Small circles all linked to a prime minister whose personal habits are -how do you say-erratic.
Blakie
By the way, Joke McConnel has just racked up £70 fleein about the World, all in First Class, as the special adviser on conflict resolution to Gordon Brown.
He was given this non job because Gordon couldn’t risk a Holyrood by-election in McConnels seat if he took up the job of Ambassador (FFS) to Malawi, which his wife, Bridget, didn’t want him to take (allegedly).
She prefers his wee fiefdom in Glasgow City Council and her mega budget some of which she doles out to social groups n’that. (allegedly)
They are all ersehole connected, as we say in Glasgow.
Sorry, I will need to proof read
She prefers her fiefdom
Joke’s fiefdom is anywhere BA go, First Class of course.

£70,000 to do whit?
Keep BA afloat?
Living in the West of Scotland I fully agree with your comments. Unfortunately in most of the constituencies here, the proverbial “scabby dug” would be elected as long as it had a Red rosette on its collar. Just one small point though, Gordon Brown was raised in Kirkcaldy and became an MP for Dunfermline East and then for Kirkcaldy & Cowdenbeath – both are in the East of the country. While I believe he was born in Renfrewshire, he was never part of what you call Clydeside. I enjoyed your article nevertheless.
He was born James Gordon Brown in Govan, Glasgow, where he father was the Minister for Govan Parish Church.
Same as me.
I am a Govan Panda Bear!
Brilliant
It has taken some time for light to be shed on an issue that’s been around for quite a while.
Have had several contacts with the Scottish Labour Party – all most unseemly.
Amazing also, the number of Scots employed in the British media and communication industry – everytime you put the radio on …..
You know, I think the time is coming to repatriate all Scots back where they belong, cut them off from the border and let them drift off towards the North Pole!
Blink, don’t tar us all with the same shitey brush!
Quite nasty these Scottish Labour chaps aren’t they? This post pulled together a lot of loose ends for me. Thanks. Interestingly, Tom Harris MP, who used to carry my blog banner until I asked him to remove it, will not publish any talk of his fellow Glasgow hoodlums, such as Martin or Sarwar. I have tried. They never see the light of day. So, even Goody Two Shoes Harris is complicit, at least by omission and censorship. I find this disappointing and slightly shocking, even at my age.
Scabby dug red rosette, you may be missing the point. It would not matter one jot if no one voted for labour in west central Scotland, labour would still win and be returned with huge majorities. !!! think about it, Glenrothes, all those postal votes, every voter register in every ward going missing.
And as for repatriating all those Scots in the media I hope you do not call them Scots to their face, they curse the day they were born in that place, they hate it and the Scots with a vengeance, greater than anyone else, to be called Scottish is to them the equivalent of swallowing a turd, to most people they are second class Englishmen, accepted in neither place.
I only hope that what is being exposed in west central Scotland finaly kills them off the people deserve better
Excellent article Anna. The Scots ‘medja’ personnel is so intertwined with the Labour Party we don’t hear a tenth of what really goes on. Certainly the mob connections with labour have come as a complete shock to most of us, though not the electoral cheating.
Keep up the good work. If you want England free of Scots Labour keep feeding the Scots voters facts like these. Thanks and good luck.
Blink
Keep the eye on the ball.
That is how they want it; divide and rule.
The Labour Party is no less corrupt in Wales or England than it is in Scotland. The added layer in Scotland and I urge to follow links that Anna has made is that there is a severe professional thug and organised crime element.
In the English Midlands it is the sub continent layer. Tell me, who has the biggest postal vote in the whole of the UK?
Jack Straw
East London, Tower Hamlets and Essex, it is similar to Glasgow as is Newcastle.
Scotland did not elect Gordon Brown or the Labour Party and force them on the English. It took much, much more English votes to do that.
I a sure that a near century ago you would be shouting the same stuff about the Irish?
Time for the English to waken up? I agree but, blaming everybody else for what you what you see as your democratic deficit and all other ails is futile.
What will happen if the United Kingdom is no more and England is only England, blame everything that goes wrong then on immigrants of bloody Northerners or day trippers from Calais?
Keep the eye on the ball, not the distractions.
Much of what you say is true however as already pointed out G Brown’s constituency is on the other side of the country from ‘Clydeside’ as is Jim Devine’s in West Lothian so they cannot reasonably be called part of the Glasgow Mafia.
Also, Monklands has never been part of Glasgow though it does border it.
A bit of fact checking would have made this a much stronger piece.
Bt(P)
eye ball on!
The same sort of argument could be made about the ‘Geordie Mafia’ as well, it’s endemic – and not just politicians but health staff, media people, local councils – so much so that it appears to be the ‘only way’ to conduct communal life – think about customer services, any company, it exits solely to defend the company – it’s not at all about rights of consumers…
Dear Cumbernauld,
I think the small geographical faux pas are really of no great significance.
It used to be the Glasgow Labour Mafia, then the West of Scotland one and really should the post industrial Central best one but, their lair is still Glasgow.
Central Belt
Bugger!
sorry
Now you know why I am so called .
All this geographical stuff’s got you a bit bamboozled, hasn’t it B(tP)?
Excellent detail about ZaNu Labour in Scotland.
Yes, I agree with the other posters your geography is slightly off but your details are spot on. The fact remains that Labour like a bacterial infection has spread from its source corruption and deprived heart-attack lands on Clydeside to reach East and North.
It will be the destruction of ZaNu Labour in Glasgow that will determine the fall of Labour in Scotland. The only problem is that these are just the stories we know about. There must be many more even Mugabe would be ashamed to be associated with the Labour party anywhere in the disUK.
Unfortunately Glasgow is the most tribal and backward place outside of Africa. They will kill each other over which church they do not attend, Fight over whether they are British or Irish when most are simply Scots who learned politics in the pub and at the football.
Glasgow has some of the best and much of worst of Scottishness yet it holds the key to throwing off the shackles of Labour and removing the numpty phuckwitts that have been digging their noses in the public purse like the hungry little faux socialist piggies that they are.
This bunch of low life has destroyed the UK completely – northerners and southerners alike. There have been some other stories flying around the bloggers stretching from Dunblane to a wee girl in Aberdeen who has been sexually abused – all link in to the Scottish establishment and the Labour party.
Then there’s the odd story of the three “asylum seekers” who “jumped” fromthe high rise in Red Road.
This needs exposing big time and soon..the bastards are holding a general election.
Jesus H Roosevelt Christ!!!
This needs exposing big time and soon
Politics, is actually all about “self interest”. So, why is everyone who is not a self interested political carpetbagger, surprised to discover Glasgow’s latest ‘BENT’ council leader is also corrupt?
Purcell has all the hallmarks of a 24 carat nugget (Glaswegian for a mug to be utterly abused and used) who has been allowed to adorn the stage for a short spell in order to take the rap for all manner of muggery of the public purse!
How can this guy simply vanish from a position were he controlled 2.5billion of a budget, (in between snorting coke) and the only people who seem to know where he has gone are – his “pals”? What pals? It’s not like we are talking about the local janitor who has done a runner and his pals are sorry for his troubles, ie, being zonked out on coke. No, this is probably the second most powerful man in Scotland (the first still being Arthur Thompson dead or not) who has suddenly been sent “on his way” by some dark force among the elite of the swindling class who have virtually pulled gold eggs out of this nugget’s arse so often he goes by the nickname GOOSE.
As for the comments on sectarianism………catholics and protestants in Scotland get on fine together. Morons, don’t. A typical example of genuine Scots loyalty is not that Scots catholics fought at Bannockburn against the English protestant army (who were also partly Scot’s) and won, only to later be defeated by religion as a nation. No, the true nature of the Scot is that we really do, regardless of religion race or colour, come together as one and all
to salute Maradona’s hand of God – goal!!!
