I can’t help thinking that Brown has missed a trick here by not including Hartlepool in his Port of Dover sale; not only would the French be assured of a unique welcome but also, if he was clever, Lord Mandelson might be able to negotiate a shiny new French ennoblement for himself to add to his showy list of titles.

I’m all for it myself. At least I could go to England without actually going, as it were.

But I must say that Plymouth would suit me better. And France already owns Brittany Ferries. Me and the family could all have a picnic at the docks, and I could come home without leaving.

In the interests of ‘togetherness’ wouldn’t it be better if Britain bought Calais? That way we could set up a big welcoming camp for people who want to move to Britain, and also start selling cut price wine for the ‘holidaymakers’.

Ah. I see.

They’d rather move some bits of Calais to Britain because the moat is a causing a bit of a problem.

The French have been here before, notably after 1066 where the Norman and later Angevin and Plantagenet’s kept a firm grip on Dover. One family of the early Constables were the Malmain’s, coat of arms three left hands. Almost a good one for Gordon Brown.
