Two points: 1. Northern Ireland emerged some years ago as a favoured destination for the 're-homing' of 'abused' children from the mainland. I put in a FOI request about this two months ago - still no satisfactory response. 2. The police continue to connive with social services about cases of child abuse that are obvious phantoms chasing targets. I'd imagine every reader is now totally confused, but it boils down to this: authority seems to have an uncanny - almost clinical - ability to miss the real abuse and 'catch' (and frame) those who aren't abusing anyone. Sometimes this is sheer incompetence; at others it relates to the fact that the systems are already penetrated by paedophile rings - as in Plymouth, Staffordshire and Liverpool; at others still, it is a case of something being seen to be done. The case of Chris Langham is a classic of this last syndrome. After the trial the police cynically branded this man 'a paedophile and a danger to society'. He is neither: he was found guilty of downloading porn - which he admitted - and that was that. The evidence only now emerging of how cops and media stitched the bloke up is horrific. (Especially see IoS mag feature, 6.12.09) Children (and their mothers) are no longer safe in the British Isles. And the reason is the authorities doing something, as opposed to the right thing....vetting and barring being the latest grand-scale farce. YM Excellent piece. Two points:
